Every November, we recognize National Addictions Awareness Week (NAAW), a dedicated time to amplify the ongoing conversation about substance use and addiction in Canada. The theme this year is “anchoring hope”. It is crucial to understand that addiction is a chronic disease, not a moral failing or a choice. It involves complex changes in the brain’s circuitry related to reward, stress, and self-control.

NAAW was established to bring national attention to the growing need for education, prevention, and compassionate responses to substance use in Canada. It began as an initiative led by the Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction (CCSA) to highlight the realities of addiction and recovery, and to challenge the stigma that often prevents people from seeking help. By dedicating a week to open dialogue, NAAW encourages Canadians to understand addiction as a health issue – one that requires care, support, and collective action rather than judgment or isolation. Open and honest conversations about substance use can lead to meaningful connections, understanding, and growth. The CCSA emphasizes the need for a comprehensive, compassionate, and evidence-based response one that brings together governments, communities, and organizations to address this crisis effectively. Alpha House’s Shelter and Detox building first opened in 1981, after it became clear in the late 1970s that many people on the streets struggling with substance use were not receiving the care or support they needed. Since then, our Detox Program has served tens of thousands of clients with their detox and recovery journey. Our Detox Program provides a stable and supportive environment for individuals withdrawing from addictive substances, with 42 beds offering continuous medical and social care.

Withdrawal management includes detox assessments, nursing and medical evaluations, opioid replacement therapies, and referrals to long-term treatment centres, as well as access to our housing team for support following program completion. Clients also have the opportunity to participate in a variety of wellness and cultural programs, including yoga, acupuncture, sweat lodge ceremonies, pipe ceremonies, and sharing circles. In addition, daily programming covers key topics such as relapse prevention and trauma, and opportunities to join NA or AA meetings and our in-house Wellbriety program.

Beyond our detox services, Alpha House provides a range of housing programs designed to meet people where they are in their recovery journey from managing use to living in abstinence. Our recovery-oriented housing operates across eight buildings, offering 24/7 intensive case management to help clients build stability and improve their quality of life.

As we recognize National Addictions Awareness Week, we’re reminded that recovery is not a single step, it’s a journey that requires compassion, understanding, and long-term community support. From our detox program to our supportive housing initiatives, Alpha House continues to walk alongside individuals as they rebuild their lives and strengthen their connection to community. Addiction touches every corner of society, but through awareness, empathy, and evidence-based care, we can help create a future where no one faces it alone. Together, we can replace stigma with understanding and isolation with hope because every person deserves the chance to heal and thrive.
